Split is the largest coastal city in Croatia, known for its rich historical monuments and Roman emperor Diocletian who built the palace there. Diocletian’s palace is one of the most preserved monuments of the Roman architecture in the world. Because of its size and all the money spent in the construction, it is believed that it accelerated Roman Empire to collapse. In Diocletian’s palace was assassinated last Western Roman Emperor Julius Nepos. Following turbulent centuries, citizens of the nearby ruined Salona, populated abandoned palace. Split’s cathedral of St Domnius is built at the peristyle of the palace, originally it was Diocletian’s mausoleum. New residents removed pagan idols, even emperor’s sarcophagus and transformed mausoleum into Christian church. They brought into the mausoleum sacred bones from Salona’s two martyr bishops, who Diocletian had executed: St Domnius, the first Salona’s bishop and Anasthasius, craftsman. Cathedral of St Domnius is the oldest cathedral in the world.

Trogir is situated at the small island between the mainland and island Čiovo. It was founded by Greek colonists in the III century BC. Trogir is considered to be the best preserved Romanesque-Gothic city in Europe.
